AT&D #14. Information Mediums

As consumers of news, we are constantly bombarded with information from a seemingly unlimited number of sources in print, broadcast, and online. Which medium delivers information in the clearest way and why do you think that’s the case?

In my opinion, the medium that delivers information the clearest way is easily broadcast. Whenever important information is discussed, whether regarding current events, lifestyle advice, or celebrity / non-celebrity interviews, I find that talk shows and news programs do the best in visually delivering and educating viewers on subjects including making the right choices in life and addressing issues civilly through commentary. Also in my opinion, despite the widespread use of articles both in print and online, especially the latter for being easily accessible today on smartphones and tablets, I personally think that watching the news gives news-seekers a more holistic and tangible picture of a story through the video and audio storytelling rather than just looking at text on a page.

I think a lot of it has to do with the engaging presentation of news on a TV screen by a live anchor or host (with the presentation sometimes accompanied by an interactive graphic, representing an element of visual persuasion supported by facts). An example I can give that illustrates visual persuasion is World News Tonight where oftentimes, studies on everyday life habits that need to be curtailed are backed up by statistics and / or live demonstrations of the negative impact of a habit followed by coverage of what has been done or what needs to be done to persuade viewers at home to reconsider their own habits.
